Adbri Cement boosts local Port Adelaide economy during January maintenance

Each year we shut down parts of our operations at our Adbri Cement (ABC) local South Australian manufacturing facility at Birkenhead to undertake scheduled maintenance and repairs.

Sections of our facility, including our two larger cement mills and the kiln, are scheduled to be shut down progressively between 4 January and 3 February, 2023. Other sections of the plant will remain in operation.

During this time, up to 500 engineering and trade contractors will be on site to undertake maintenance valued at $22.5 million, including on our mills and kiln.

ABC’s parent company, Adbri, directly employs more than 470 South Australians – and indirectly more than 2000 South Australians.

In addition to improving our plant’s productivity, securing South Australian jobs for Adbri Cement employees and ensuring continuous compliance with environmental standards, the maintenance means extra work for many local Port Adelaide contractors.

It also means contractors from other parts of SA (and some from interstate) will be coming to Birkenhead and spending money in the Port Adelaide community on accommodation, restaurants, groceries, recreation etc.

Detailed planning has been undertaken to keep any noise disturbance in the local area to a minimum. The Shutdown will involve a significant increase in contractors visiting the site each day.

If there are any issues that need to be reported, please contact our community hotline on 8300 0520 or email – BirkenheadCommunity@adbri.com.au.

The supply of cement and cement products to Adbri Cement’s customers will not be impacted by the Shutdown period.

We have been operating for 140 years and Shutdowns for maintenance are a regular part of operations for ABC, as they are for other major Australian manufacturing facilities.

We spend more than $300 million directly each year in South Australia and contribute $210 million pa in gross value add (or local spend) to the Port Adelaide Enfield community.

We are also significant sponsors of numerous local community events and groups.

In a one minute video, our General Manager Operations (SA, NT, NSW), Michael Williams (who is based at our Birkenhead facility) talks about our support for the recent Port Adelaide Dockside Festival.

Adbri Cement has led the way in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by replacing fossil fuels with alternative fuels. Our general purpose cement, made at Birkenhead, has Australia’s lowest embodied carbon.

We are proud to be building a better Australia.
