Alternative Raw Materials Operational Update

Neat Milled Slag Project

ABC has submitted a proposal to the EPA to move part of its manufacture of Neat Milled Slag from our Birkenhead site to our Angaston Operations.

The proposal improves the operational efficiency and sustainability of ABC’s Birkenhead and Angaston operations and contributes to the local economy of South Australia.

What will change at ABC’s Birkenhead site?

  • Slag will be transferred to Angaston from Birkenhead
  • There will be no significant increase to truck traffic to the Birkenhead site, as truck movements are offset by reduction in Neat Milled Slag product movements
  • There will be no significant change in fugitive dust and noise emissions associated with the Neat Milled Slag process changes.

The Birkenhead site has comprehensive EPA approved Dust Management and Noise Management Plans with a focus on ensuring dust and noise controlled by good operational practices, physical and management controls.

What are Alternative Raw Materials and Why does Adbri Cement use them?

Alternative raw materials are by-products from other industrial processes which are rich in beneficial minerals including calcium, silica, alumina, or iron and can replace traditional mined raw materials such as limestone, clay, and ironstone.

Through beneficial use of these secondary industrial materials, we reduce consumption of natural resources and contribute to a circular economy in support of Adbri’s 2030 carbon intensity reduction targets and NetZero 2050 goal.

For example, Neat Milled Slag is used as a cementitious substitute and reduces the carbon intensity of cement by reducing the proportion of clinker required in our products.
