The Adbri Birkenhead team held an uplifting, educational National Reconciliation Week event today, with a Welcome to Country by Kuma Karuu and a speech by Kaurna/Narrunga woman Cecilia Taylor from Indigenous Training and Recruitment (ITR).
Today was the first time that Cecilia had ever done public speaking and she said our Birkenhead manufacturing facility was the perfect spot for this as she grew up next door and attended school on the Le Fevre Peninsula.
Cecilia spoke about how powerful it was that her school principal (Mr Murphy) had encouraged Indigenous students “to dive deep into our culture”.
She also shared what Reconciliation means to her: “to me, it means learning to use love to connect with one another.” She encouraged further progress in workplaces by “building relationships with Aboriginal colleagues and having a better understanding of our cultural backgrounds.”
Adbri General Manager Operations (SA/NSW/NT) Michael Williams thanked Kuma Karuu and Cecilia for helping the Birkenhead team to learn more about Indigenous culture.
Cecilia was joined by ITR Director David Meyers and Senior Cultural Mentor Tim Graham (pictured with Michael Williams).
