Adbri’s goal is to be Australia’s lowest carbon local cement manufacturer, with net zero emissions by 2050.
We mentioned earlier this month that we were conducting an Environment Protection Authority-approved trial at our Adbri Cement Ltd (ABC) facility at Birkenhead to reduce our use of non-renewable fossil fuels by using additional alternative fuel.
The trial has now begun and will run for a three month period.
The alternative fuel is Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF). RDF is a process-engineered fuel, produced from construction and demolition waste that is sorted and processed at an off-site facility. It is a critical fossil fuel replacement used by cement plants globally to reduce their carbon footprint by diverting waste from landfill.
Our calciner at our Birkenhead facility already uses 90 percent RDF and 10 percent natural gas (a non-renewable fossil fuel). The trial will test increasing this to 100 percent RDF.
We will keep you posted on the outcomes of this exciting trial. We have been contributing to sustainability and the circular economy by using alternative fuel at Birkenhead for 18 years. It is just one of the many ways that we are building a better Australia.
