Update on Adbri Cement’s boost to local Port Adelaide economy during January maintenance

We have been making good progress with the current Shutdown (4 January to 3 February) at our Adbri Cement (ABC) Birkenhead manufacturing facility in order to undertake planned maintenance and repairs.

Sections of our facility, including our two larger cement mills and the kiln, are being progressively shut down. Other sections of the plant are still operating.

The maintenance and repair work improve our environmental performance and production efficiency.

One of the milestones is installing the Unitherm MAS new Burner Pipe in Kiln 4.

The new burner’s benefits will include better quality clinker – an intermediary product used in manufacturing cement.

Simultaneously with the Birkenhead Shutdown, scheduled annual maintenance work on the cargo handling equipment on our limestone carrier ship, The Accolade II, is being undertaken at Outer Harbor, adjacent to the Passenger Terminal.

During the Shutdown, up to 500 engineering and trade contractors will be on site at Birkenhead to undertake maintenance valued at $22.5 million.

ABC’s parent company, Adbri, directly employs more than 470 South Australians – and indirectly more than 2000 South Australians.

Contractors from other parts of SA (and some from interstate) are coming to Birkenhead and spending money in the Port Adelaide community on accommodation, restaurants, groceries, recreation etc.

Detailed planning has been undertaken to keep any noise disturbance in the local area to a minimum, including installing a noise barrier. The Shutdown involves a significant increase in contractors visiting the site each day.
